After cycling in Bologna for a year, I met a group of cyclists that made me fall in love with cycle touring. With them, I learned a lot, like what and how to eat to maintain a steady energy level, how to change a flat tyre, and how to choose routes. I discovered how enjoyable bike trips are and had the opportunity to visit and get to know small towns and cities in the area. Often, on Sundays, we would also go cycling in the 'Bassa,' the Po Valley.
In this Collection, I propose an itinerary to explore the Po Valley, Emilia, and three cities: Bologna, Modena, and Ferrara. Starting from Bologna, you'll follow the track to Spilamberto where you'll find the Eurovelo 7, part of the European cycle network, to Modena. From Modena, you'll follow the old railway, now turned into a cycle path, to the Panaro River and the Emilia canals to Ferrara. Finally, you'll cycle along historic canals that were once navigable, back to Bologna.
I suggest dividing the itinerary into three stages, but it's always possible to split it over more days or combine some stages. The route is entirely flat, making it suitable for all abilities, excellent for families and those new to cycle touring. For those looking for a challenge, or for those training, this loop can also be tackled in a single day. The terrain is mostly asphalt with some stretches of gravel, so it's ideal for touring, gravel and mountain bikes.
Each stage begins and ends at a train station, which is useful if you only want to do a portion of the loop. At the end of each stage, there are campsites, hostels, B&Bs, restaurants, and shops – I recommend booking in advance. Along the route, there are numerous fountains to refill water bottles and many villages for a rest stop. The itinerary can be tackled year-round. If you choose to cycle in winter, remember to bring lights and make yourself highly visible, as you might encounter the famous thick fog of the Po Valley.
Happy cycling!
