Lanzarote is one of the most extraordinary islands of the Canary archipelago. Its surface is marked by geological activity, which has drawn hundreds of craters on its skin over millions of years. The mountains, of volcanic origin, and the arid badlands cover the length and breadth of the island like a blanket. Interspersed with black earth crops, reddish deserts and rugged cliffs, these landscapes appear to be from another planet. The whitewashed towns are captivating, the endemic vegetation thrives despite the lack of water, and the golden sand beaches beckon you to the sea.
This Collection guides you from Órzola to Playa Blanca along the Lanzarote Natural Trail (GR 131), following a path from north to south. This long-distance itinerary aims to unite all the Canary Islands as part of the E7 European trail, which runs through numerous countries from Portugal to Hungary.
I’ve divided the 75-kilometre (46 mi) trail into four stages, although it’s possible to take it at a slower pace. The entire island is classified as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO; you’ll visit protected natural spaces such as the La Corona monument, the Famara massif and La Geria. The route also passes close to the Ajaches massif, the Volcanoes natural park and the Timanfaya national park.
This Lanzarote journey begins in Órzola, which you can easily reach from Arrecife. Head to the bus station and take line 9 ( arrecifebus.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2350&lang=es ). To return to Arrecife from Playa Blanca, catch line 60 ( arrecifebus.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2360&lang=es ).
All days end in towns with accommodation and restaurants, but I’d advise booking in advance because the island is popular year round.
Although the crossing doesn’t require special technical skills, it’s important to be fit enough to tackle the distances and uneven terrain. Load up every day with plenty of water and some food – along the way, you’ll pass through different towns, but you won’t find find water fountains. It’s also important to take a waterproof jacket and sun protection.
Lanzarote, like the rest of the Canary Islands, has a temperate climate. You can undertake this adventure at any time, but bear in mind temperatures are higher in summer and the days are shorter in winter. The island is often windy; although the route is designed downwind, I recommend checking the weather forecast before starting.
Let yourself be surprised by the island of volcanoes. Go for it!
